Over the last ten years in the health coaching field, I’ve discovered there are 3 key mistakes health coaches make that prevent them from growing their list and getting clients online.
See if you’re making any of these blunders…
Mistake #1: You don’t have an opt-in gift (or you have one, but it’s not compelling enough).
Not having an opt-in gift is a huge mistake, especially if you’re a health coach looking to build your list and get new clients. Without an opt-in gift, people have little reason to give you their contact information. And if they close your web page without giving you their email address, they’re gone forever — then you’ve missed out on an opportunity to follow up with them, nurture them, and turn them into a client.
Or perhaps you currently have an opt-in gift…but it’s not compelling enough, so people don’t sign up. In this case, sadly, it’s almost like not having an opt-in gift at all.
How to fix this:
Creating a free opt-in gift that truly “speaks” to your ideal clients is the critical first step when it comes to growing your list.

Mistake #2: After putting a free gift on your site, you merely *hope* enough people will see it and opt-in.
I’ve spoken to many coaches who are proud and excited because they’ve added a free gift to their website – and they assume this will automatically grow their list.
Then a couple of months later they find their list hasn’t grown much and they feel deflated and wonder what they should be doing differently.
Creating an opt-in gift and adding it to your website is very important, and if you’ve taken these steps you SHOULD feel proud! However, if you’re serious about growing your list, there are other steps you should be taking.
How to fix this:
In order to grow your list, you’ll want to drive traffic to your website (and landing page), so people SEE your free gift and decide to opt-in and join your list.
One of my favorite ways to drive traffic is guest blogging.
Guest blogging is where you write a blog post (like this one) that gets posted on someone else’s site.
I’ve often generate over 100 new subscribers to my list each time I publish a guest post. You can imagine that if you regularly published guest blog posts that you would have a nice flow of new subscribers coming in!
In order for a guest blog post to be effective at building your list, you’ll want to pay attention to a few items:
· Publish posts on a sites that attract your ideal clients
· Target sites that get a good amount of traffic – this way more people will see your post!
· Write a great post that addresses your audience’s main pain point and provides a lot of value. This will leave the readers wanting more!
· Share a link to a landing page where you promote your free gift. Include this link in the post and in your bio at the end of the post. (This is how you can use the post to grow your list!)
Mistake #3: Once people join your list, you do nothing except wait for them to contact you.
I used to assume that once potential clients learned about me (and joined my list) that it was up to them to “make the first move” and reach out to me. I thought “if they’re interested in working with me, of course they’ll call or email me.”
It took me a while to realize that this is a very passive and ineffective approach.
If you’ve been taking this approach, then you’re probably missing out on thousands, or even tens of thousands of dollars worth of potential income. There are so many opportunities to turn your subscribers into paying clients. But “waiting” is nothing more than leaving money on the table.
How to fix this:
Instead, send your new subscribers a series of emails that will turn them into clients.
“How do I do that?” you ask. “How do I write emails that get people to sign-up to work with me?”
Great questions.
The secret is in writing an effective email sequence. This is a series of 6-7 or more emails you create specifically for the people who opt-in to receive your Free Gift. This allows you to turn new leads into clients…even if they’ve never spoken to you before.
How does it work? Write the emails in advance, plug them into your email service provider (such as MailChimp, Constant Contact, AWeber, etc.)…then subscribers will receive your emails automatically over a certain period of time.
These emails should introduce your subscribers to who you are, your business, and the benefits of working with you. And, they should invite people into a free initial consultation or into a low-cost program, like a cleanse or detox.
