Prepare for a More Abundant Year for your Health Coaching Business

It’s December already, and this year is quickly coming to a close. Another one for the books.

I’ve been in business for over 10 years now, and I sometimes catch myself revisiting the past as I get distracted into a daydream. Sometimes the memories I revisit are good ones and they give me a supportive boost to move me forward, but other times I get stuck rehashing past failures and painful times that do me no good at all.

I believe it’s important to take a moment to reflect on the year that’s ending, and to make peace with both the successes and failures. Be mindful to spend more time on what you have to celebrate and be thankful for. Acknowledge, and then let go of, the experiences that make you feel bad.

Being in business means having some lows (we all go through it), and it doesn’t help to beat yourself up over a lackluster list-building campaign or a group program you had to cancel due to low enrollment. Celebrate instead that you put yourself out there and took some chances in your business. Next year, prepare to use those experiences as a jumping off place for success. Allow the space to learn from your trials and errors.

If you’re regretful because you let another year go by without giving your coaching business a real shot at success, it’s time to make a decision. Are you in or out? If you’re committed to growing your business, start the new year strong with a clear intention, a marketing plan, and an environment that supports you (this might include hiring a coach). Don’t just keep “winging it” and hoping for the best. If that strategy didn’t work this year, it won’t work next year either.

“Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be encumbered with your old nonsense.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

Prepare for a more abundant new year for your business with these simple steps:

First, do the math. You don’t really know your business unless you know your numbers. So add up how much income your business earned this year, and subtract what it cost to run your business, and you’ll know how you did.

Now think ahead to next year’s goals for your business and put them in writing. Break it down to how much you’d like to earn per month, or per quarter. Consider how you’d like to earn those dollars. Private coaching? An online course or product for sale? A group program you’ll run twice next year?

Get specific about how much you need to charge for each level of service and how many clients you’ll need for each to match your income goals. You might be surprised what you learn as you run these numbers, especially if you’ve never done this before.

Now look at your current business support environments. Do you have the time in your weekly calendar to work with the number of clients you want? Do you have time set aside to market? Is your office space calming and centering and does it help motivate you to get work done?

Is your family on board? It might be a good idea to start the year with a heart-to-heart with your family to let them know your business goals and your plans for making time for your business and how you’ll balance that with time for them. Let them know what kind of support you need from them.

Do you have the best tech in place to support the success of your business? Do you have a professional website that reflects your unique message, attracts your ideal clients and builds your list? Are you engaging with potential clients consistently and authentically with your ezine and social media platforms? Are you ready to receive new income?

Yes, there’s a lot of questions to answer. And this is just the quick and dirty version. Make space to work through these questions before the new year begins for your business. Really good point Heather – I think we’re all so focused on what we’d like to achieve next that we don’t take enough time to acknowledge our accomplishments of the year past. Definitely a great way to boost confidence in success for 2016 goals!
